Halloween in Copenhagen, honestly

Copenhagen is good at the end of October for a reason that has nothing to do with Halloween: it is finally dark. Sunset on 25 October is 4:48 pm and on the thirty-first 4:35 pm, and the city has spent the whole month losing 2 hrs 13 min of daylight. Tivoli runs a Halloween season from 2 October to 1 November with two haunted houses inside it. The ghost walk runs its usual set evenings, and they are the first to go.

What the city actually puts on

Tivoli Gardens is the organised part. The gardens opened on 15 August 1843, founded by Georg Carstensen, and are the second-oldest continuously operating amusement park in the world after Dyrehavsbakken; 4.25 million people came through in 2024. The Halloween season runs 2 October to 1 November and the gardens put two haunted houses on for it, with a published warning that they are not for the faint of heart or for young children. The guided ghost walk is not a Halloween event and does not pretend to be. It runs its ordinary hour and a half from Nytorv on its ordinary set evenings, with a guide, a cloak and a lantern and no effects. What changes in late October is that the walk is finally taking place in the dark, which is the only special effect it ever needed.

The dark is the point

A visitor who comes for Halloween and a visitor who comes for atmosphere are chasing the same thing without knowing it. The last week of October is the moment the year turns here: the clocks go back, sunset drops to before five in the afternoon, and the walk from Nytorv down to Kongens Nytorv happens entirely after dark for the first time since the previous winter. This is the practical warning. The guided ghost walk runs on set evenings and there are not many of them; a reviewer who took it in August 2026 complained that only one date was available in the entire month. October dates carry the highest demand of the year. If Halloween week is the week you are here, treat the walk as the fixed point of the trip and build the rest around whatever evening you can get.

The most Danish thing you can do on 31 October is not a haunted house. Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro opened in 1760 as a burial ground for the poor, after the plague of 1711 overwhelmed the churchyards inside the walls, and its 25 hectares hold Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard and Niels Bohr. In the 1800s Copenhageners took picnic baskets and tea there for the afternoon. It is a public park and it is free to walk into.

A plan for Halloween week

Book the ghost walk for whichever evening exists, and treat it as the anchor. Put Tivoli on a different evening, because the gardens are a long visit and the haunted houses have their own queues. Keep an afternoon for Assistens Cemetery while there is still light, since by the end of October there is none after half past four.
